'The Last Lesson' - Alphonse Daudet
M. Hamel was a traditional schoolteacher who had been teaching the French language for about 40 years. A patriotic disciplinarian, M. Hamel held a great iron ruler under his arm which he struck on the table and was a fearsome teacher for Franz and the other kids. However, when the order from Berlin arrived, he looked solemn, kind, and sentimental. He wore a beautiful green coat, frilled shirt, and a small silk cap - an attire he wore only on inspection and prize days - while he called French the most beautiful, clearest, and most logical language in the world and asked others to hold fast to their language as a key to their prison and never forget it. He had the courage to hear every lesson and blamed himself. Courageous to hear every lesson, he blamed himself with a broken heart for Franz's confusion and inability.
